Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for building defensives and fleets for a new player like me?

umm. I would work towards getting atleast Guass cannons. Then get like 10-20 of them. I have 10. But i also have 10 plasma turrets. If you have any excess metal, use it on rocket launchers. I have 1000.

Should a medium ranked player like me focus more on defense, or building up a fleet?

it all depends on what sort of player you are if you always send out your resouses and fleet save which takes alot of time and dedication then you will need no defences what-so-ever on your planet but if you don't have the time to do all that then i suggest you aim for enough defence so that players won't see you as 'free resouces' but i suggest that you don't become someone who has to much because resouces are not the only thing that attracts players some attack you just for kicks if you have quiet a big fleet or defence and others if your defence is strong they will brake it so latter on when you are better you won't have an unbrakeable defence but also i think fleets are a target and someone with a bigger one will offen come along and crush yours and leave you open for any one to steal your resouses.
anyway its your decition but i would suggest you don't just get one or the other.

Right now, I'm focusing more on defense and trying to upgrade stuff to get plasma turrets. Once I get plasma turrets, I'll try and get back to building a fleet.

Yea It's important to buid up a defence before a fleet. I got sacked because I had 65 cruisere on my main planet like half a year ago.

But if you are going to build up a fleet, it is essential to build up a strong defence first.

Actually, it is still a good idea. Because even if you fleet save, you might still be a target and if you don't have a strong defence, you can easily be sacked.

ok the only way you can be sacked when you fleet save and take your resouces with you is when someone with a moon uses the phlanex and times there attack just after you fleet gets back, but that is risky cause they can't see how many resouces you are carrying and its hard to be able to espianage someone fast enough to see if the attack is worth it and if not have enough time to call off the attack. the defender only needs 30seconds to send out their fleet before the attack does all that. its a rare case and dosent happen offen.
if you never have resouces on your planet then when people espianage you they will think of you as worthless and mostlikely leave you alone because they can't benifit from you.

maybe, but still if you have too many ships, then might decide that you are a possible threat.
